Keep the winter blues out while bringing some nature in with these birch bark and pine cone trees. A simple craft project and great winter decor! I grew up in a warm climate and have always considered myself an outdoors person. Whether relaxing on our deck and keeping rhythm to the songs of crickets and tree frogs each night or taking a walk in the woods and enjoying the fresh air, I always enjoyed having a bit of nature by my side. But with the single-digit temperatures of New England winters, it is way too cold for me to spend any time outdoors. So this winter I decided to bring a bit of nature into our home. Since I had no intention of adopting an orchestra of crickets, nor an army of frogs, I thought it would be best to do it in the form of winter decoration.
This was one of the simplest projects ever. All I needed was a hot glue gun, some pine cones and birch bark, and a couple of Styrofoam cones. (aff link)
First I started with the pine cone tree. I painted the Styrofoam cone with dark brown craft paint, so white Styrofoam wouldn't show underneath the pine cones. Then, starting from the bottom, I hot glued the pine cones one-by-one on the Styrofoam cone.
It may look very time consuming, but before you know it you are at the top row.
The birch bark tree was even simpler, as I didn't have to paint the Styrofoam cone. I broke the birch bark in to small pieces. Then, again starting from the bottom of the cone, I simply hot glued the broken bark pieces on the Styrofoam cone.
Now, how simple is that!
I am so happy with the way they turned out. Very simple, but perfect for winter decor!
The birch bark tree is yet to have a name.
But this lady is called the "Auburn Fire."
I think she carries her name so well!
