I was asked to transform this garage sale purchase, into something for a child's beach themed bedroom. Since there was no sentimental attachment to this piece, I was told to do whatever I wanted with it.
The first thing I did was remove those chunky wooden blocks that filled the door areas. Once those were removed, I patched the areas with Bondo, sanded, and then primed for my next step.

Using this sweet stencil I ordered from Etsy, I used Durhams Rock Hard Putty, created a paste with the consistency of peanut butter, and applied it over the stencil with a putty knife, then removed.
Once the putty was dry, I lightly sanded, and started painting. I chose Sherwin Williams "Coral Reef" and added Polyvine Chalkpaint Maker to make my own DIY chalk type paint.
Using another stencil for the top, I started my repeat process using Miss Mustard Seed white wax and a chip brush.
With both clear and white waxes, I started my crevice detailing. I carefully applied General Finishes Pearl Effects Glaze, with my finger, to detail the seahorses.
Using Mod Podge, I applied a perfect fabric I found at Joann's to adorn the back wall, for an extra surprise inside.
Once the wax on top was good and dry (about 48 hours) I used Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish in dead flat, to seal the top. Polyvine has a wax base, which is why this works over quality waxes.
To complete the project, I added some antique brass knobs I'd picked up from Hobby Lobby. I chose to leave them in their gold color, to add contrast, and coordinate with the hinges exposed.
All ready to go.... I hope she loves her for many years..
