Although I am demonstrating on an old hammer, but I have successfully used this method to remove the rust from my other tools including garden tools.
Yes it is possible to remove the rust from anything and keep it away.
Immerse the rusted object fully in vinegar.
On large objects, which are hard to immerse, you can cover the rusted area with a paper towel or even some rag soaked in vinegar. In nutshell rust should be in constant contact with vinegar.
After soaking the rusted object in vinegar for a few hours, give it a good scrub.
Then a good bath.
After drying fully, wax the newly de-rusted object to keep the rust away.
That's it.
A final before and after shot. does not even look like the same hammer. For more photos and detailed information check my blog.
