Summer is made for backyard BBQs, picnics and camping. But sometimes it isn't very comfortable to sit ground-level while enjoying an outdoor meal. These crates are both functional and inexpensive. All you need is a little leftover wood, a plastic crate and some hardware. Carry items in the crate, then flip it over and you've got yourself a comfortable seat to enjoy this Summer.
Step 1) Spray paint a square plastic crate the color of your choice. Or, purchase a plastic crate in the color of your choice.
Step 2) Measure the width and height of your crate.
Step 3) Cut pieces of wood to measure the same width and height of your crate. Be sure to cut enough to cover the entire bottom of the crate.
Step 4) Measure how far in the holes are the side of the crate. Mine were 1" in from each side.
Step 5) Mark the measurement from step 4, onto two of your wood slates on either side. This is where your bolts will be inserted.
Step 6) Drill a hole at this mark, large enough for your bolt to fit through.
Step 7) You will have four cut boards (or more depending on the length of your scrapwood). The two on either end should have a hole on the top and bottom. The middle pieces do not need holes drilled.
Step 8) Glue your wood pieces together with wood glue. Press them together and use a clamp to bond them overnight if necessary.
Step 9) Flip your crate over so that the bottom is right side up. Place the wood piece on top of the bottom. Grab your bolts.
Step 10) Insert one bolt into each of the holes.
Step 11) On the inside of the crate, thread a washer onto the bolt and secure with a nut.
Step 12) All four corners should be secure. Now, you are ready to fill with the items to carry to your picnic!
Enjoy your picnic, bbq or make the campsite a little more comfortable with these handy crate seats! And if you're looking for more wood projects, then be sure to check out the DIY woodworking projects page for some awesome do-it-yourself woodworking ideas!
