We had an old picnic table that the dogs would climb up on. But they are getting up in years and having a hard time climbing now. So we decided to sell the picnic table and get a plant table for the porch. I put it for sale on Craigslist. Nobody wanted it. I reduced the price. Then I put it in the Free section. While doing this I hunted for a four legged table to replace it. (We didn't want the pedestal type.) Weeks (and a couple hurricanes) went by and nothing. It's a very old table, old wood. All 2 x 4s. Ever notice how much heavier the old wood is compared to the new stuff? This table was too big and too heavy for what we wanted. But I was stuck with it. So another project was born.
This was the original dog table I couldn't seem to get rid of.
Started taking it apart.
Removed the seats.
Sawed off seat joints that were sticking out. Later I shortened the top, also. Altogether I gained a total of 18 inches front to back, and almost a foot on the ends. This made it much smaller and a lot easier to move around.
We bought the paint on sale, and love the color (it's not for everyone) and bought the plastic runner as a remnant from Home Depot. The dogs are still upset with us. lol On the back side you can see a shelf. This is where the cats like to hang out so I left it on. It got covered with a scrap piece of plywood to make it smooth. This coming spring the porch walls and floor are getting redone. I have a bunch of these side jobs to finish before then.
Enjoyed the project?
Suggested materials:
- Plywood (scrap I already had)
- Paint (Sherwin-Williams Store)
- Vinyl runner (remnant from Home Depot)

Thank you, Wendy. We are very committed to recycling and re-purposing materials others throw out.
