I had a gentlemen I work with asked me to carve and paint a coffee table for a friend and the theme was tribal/safari. I had a roadside table that fit the bill so I tore apart the table and began the makeover. Not my decor taste but who am I to judge?
I removed the lip section by popping out the screw plugs and unscrewing the sections to remove.
I used a orbital sander to remove the sad finish to expose the bare wood.
I freehand sketched out the stone look design as a border for the table.
I used my dremel tool to carve out the stone design for the border.
After I carved the stone border I painted the stones with white acrylic paint and let it dry. After the white paint was thoroughly dry I wiped on black acrylic paint over the entire stone border and wiped it back off so the black paint stayed in all of the crevices. I sketched the desired safari design.
I mixed watercolor paint with water to create a stain (orange and burnt sienna) I then stained the table top darker on the bottom and the lighter on top. I then used black acrylic paint and painted the safari silhouette.
I used acrylic glaze from Lowe's and finished the table top and let it cure according to the pkg.
Supplies used: Orbital sander, dremel tool, water color tubes, black and white acrylic tubes, glaze coat, black spray paint, and brushes.
Finished product.
