How To Wash Cotton Upholstery Fabric

2 Materials
1 Hour
Easy

Washing upholstery fabric can be tricky business, especially when the fabric has already been fashioned into something like a curtain or tablecloth. For these items, I usually go to the dry cleaner. However being stuck at home, I decided to wash the fabric myself.

*My fabric was 100% cotton. Always know your content and check with manufacturers for cleaning recommendations. Some fabrics do not mix well with water.

Drop It In The Washer

After I removed my sink skirt from the cabinet doors - you can peek at my easy open sink skirt here, if you like - I placed them in the washing machine and set it to hand wash.

I used cold water so nothing would run or shrink.

The key is a very gentle cycle.

Air Dry

When the cycle was complete, I removed the fabric from the washer, shook it out gently and hung it up immediately to air dry.

Iron And Check Seams

When the fabric was dry, I ironed it. I used a warm, not hot, setting and no steam. I didn't want water to drip on the panels again.

I also used this time to inspect my seams and make sure that nothing came undone in the wash cycle.

Done!

When I was done, I was ready to hang the panels back up, all fresh and clean.

Of course, I didn't. I tucked these away for fall and made myself a new sink skirt!! Go peek! icon
