Choose flooring
I have decided to get rid of my old carpets in my bedroom and want to to replace with vinyl planking, which i have in the rest of the house, but unfortunately flooring businesses do not carry our vinyl anymore so have to choose a new colour. One is a close match the other is lighter as our bedroom furniture is dark. Which would work if any, or none?

Oh no! That sucks. Of the two options I like the bottom one best. Maybe run it perpendicular to the other one to make a clear break?
I also like the bottom sample better of the two. I don't think it "clashes" with the furniture but perhaps not the best option. I don't think it particularly sets off the furniture at all.
Have you considered maybe a totally different look of a grayish tone since you can't match the hall? I would take a drawer to the store and look at every option before deciding. You may surprise yourself with a different direction. Good luck! 😎
Based on the photos, I would go with the lighter shade and run it in a different direction. Perhaps even go herringbone. The lighter shade would look best with your furniture and doing a different pattern would make it less obvious. You can also put a throw rug at the entrance to break the difference as well.
Hi Michelle, I would definitely go with the sample that most closely matches the flooring in the reemainder of the home. I saw this mostly for resale value; however, thay not be a consideration for you.
Why not look at OTHER sources for flooring. There are many!
I would go with the one that is close to the floor you already have.
Choose the lightest color or else it will look like you tried to match the existing color, but missed. The lighter color will also offset the dark bedroom furniture nicely. Good luck!
I agree with Baxter unless you have a perfect match to your old floor this isn't going to look good.
As with all hardwoods, those stained a darker color require a seal coat to protect them from scraping, scratching, and everyday wear and tear. They tend to mask ordinary staining from food or beverages better, but darker hardwoods tend to show scrapes and scratch marks easier. This is because the gouges typically go through the stained color and into the undyed, much lighter wood.
Such damage can be avoided by taking a few steps, as mentioned in our previous post. Limit wearing heels to rooms that do not have hardwoods. Trim pets’ nails and clean up spills as soon as possible. Lay rugs in high-traffic areas to minimize wearing. Put up curtains to mitigate sun damage, and add pads to furniture feet to avoid scratching. If you’re still concerned, use an extra layer or more durable seal coat to add additional protection, and be sure to refinish or re-coat your hardwood floors regularly to ensure that the layer stays strong.
I like the lower one :)
Have you tried any discount places or surplus places to see if they have your flooring?
Hmmmmm, both look like the floors are trying to be matched, it is obvious. You may never get a perfect match in either color, pattern, or style, there is even variation in lots of flooring, so unless you can get that same lot from the same manufacturer, you will have a difference in color. I would go with picking something different other than what you have down now. There are many flooring types and textures, take a trip to flooring centers and see what is there, looking costs nothing or you can have someone come to your home and bring samples of what that store suggests. One thing you might consider is a strip at the thresh-hold to be a break between the hall and the bedroom. Best to you.
I like the darker, but it is your home and you are the one that needs to be happy with your pick. Good luck.
Hello,
Do you know the manufacturer of the original flooring? If so you could ask them for information or best match! The darker one of the two looks better to me, but in any case, I would put a threshold through at the door so the two floorings a a little apart so any difference might not be so obvious.
I like the bottom
If it were me, I'd pick something that works well with the existing floor but is definitely different if you can't find anything that matches. If it has to be different, in my opinion, may as well make that a feature than attempting to match but missing the mark. It stands out more if it's close but not quite.
Hi Michelle,
I prefer the bottom.
Second, one way to help the transition between the two floors is by custom staining a wood saddle. I've done it a few times during some of our renovation projects (unfortunately I didn't run my blog back then so I didn't document the process).
A wood saddle is not expensive and you can purchase small mini wax stains of different colors. Then layer the stains to "arrive" at a middle ground.
Hope that helps
Rebecca
the one on the left that lighter
I select the darker of those two.
I like the one that is a closer match.
Have you thought about using laminate in the bedrooms? maybe they would have more selection.. just a thought...
lighter one will always look better
This is helpful. I am facing the same problem
