Can i add a color glaze over white wicker?
I purchased a white wicker dresser that is in very good condition. However it is a very bright white and I'd like to tone down the brightness. I don't want to fully paint it. I was wondering if I can just add a glaze of color over the top. The white would still show through. I could always paint it if I didn't like the way it turned out.

Yes I'm sure that would work fine! I would do a test spot first though maybe on the back of the dresser to make sure the results are what you're looking for :)
Yes, a glaze will work. I would start with a light color first, then you can always go darker if you don't like it.
Dry brush or use a rag and dip the paint into the paint and highlight the wicker. You can always add more so go lightly at first.
I don't see any reason you couldn't add a glaze to it. To save yourself a lot of work, try one drawer and see if you like the results. For glaze, I normally apply and wipe quickly. If it isn't dark enough then I do another application and wipe off. Repeating until I get the look I want.
Here's what 1 lady did, I am sure it can be adapted to your wicker project:

Hi Kim, You shouldn't have any problem applying a glaze over the wicker. Fusion Mineral Paint makes a great antiquing glaze that has a long open time. The long open time (time to dry) allows you to play with it and add more remove so you get the look you like.
A glaze should work well. You could also use a colored wax to tone down the bright white you don't care for so much.
That could look cool! You could swap the knobs for something darker too
Glaze should work with no problem. You might consider a gel stain which would work just like a glaze or if it doesn't turn out right using a glaze
Hello yes that would be absolutely phenomenal solution to tone down the starkness of a bright solid paint.
Hello,
Try colour on the frame and the handles and maybe the trim edge of the drawers. That might tone it down a bit. Otherwise why not try spray it, as you say, if you don't like it you can do it again. Antique wax might be another alternative.
I love using glazes. It would work. Use a toned down color. ( I wouldn't use black glaze) Mix 1 part paint to 3 parts glaze. Apply and wipe off wherever you want. Glaze is pretty easy to use and you can just wipe it off when you don't like something. Good luck. Make sure if you glaze is water based, your paint that you are mixing it with is also water based.
You can do a "white wash" on them using a very watered down paint color of your choice. Do a little practice on an old basket. You can do repeated washes until you are happy with the color change.
I say go for it! This video is great in that it shows brush techniques: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUrwCrcHRoc
Hi Kim, you sure can, you could do the wipe method to take some of the brightness off it, pick a color you like and use a sponge to apply the color to it, the gaps will stay white but the sponge will color the surface.
Hi! Just as you can whitewash, you can water down any latex paint to do a wash. You might consider a light spray of spray paint in a softer white. I have wicker nightstands that started out white, and over the years I've used spray paint on them to brighten them up. Good luck!

Yes, you can water down acrylic paint and wash it over your wicker. You can even try rubbing it on with a rag.
Yes you can.
