Some people are simply less concerned about germs than others. Most diy-ers are savvy and would disinfect the supplies if they were concerned. I attempted to get numbers regarding your question but could not locate any such studies available. Generally, e. coli is associated with food contamination.

  • I never though to sanitize them before crafting and have never had a problem. If you let them sit a while I think the germs die. Needs to be just the right temperature for bacteria to grow.

    Hi Darlene,

Sounds like you are speaking of contamination of toilet paper rolls that can come from several sources. One is direct contamination of the cardboard roll by a person and another by toilet plume. Ann gave 2 methods which uses the terms sanitizing and disinfection, which come down to the same thing, get rid of pathogens. Some people do this and others rely on the good hygiene of the person(s) using the bathroom and the cleanliness of the bathroom.

The actual tp roll on a holder has a very limited exposure to the surroundings, think about it for a moment. The free standing ones are more at risk with the human as the variable.

All in all there is a very low risk of fecal contamination from these cardboard rolls.

An alternative is to use a paper towel roll and cut it to size.

One of the most practical ways to control pathogens is to wash the hands with warm soapy water.

    Best to you.

  • I would just let them sit for a week and they should be fine.

I generally select paper towel rolls to use and cut the to size, but I believe if you spray the toilet paper rolls with a disinfectant and let them set for a week or so, you should have no germs on them. I would never judge anyone else for using items for crafting, it is up to the individual.

Hi! If there is no visible soiling, you could sit them in the sun. Leaving them on a sunny windowsill for a few hours would work. Paper towel rolls work, too. If you find the idea off putting, just don't do those crafts or make your tube out of thin cardboard and glue. Good luck!

I am of the same feeling as you. I would not be comfortable with it but I have used paper towel cylinders for things like holding crayons and markers for the kids. I just cut them in the length of a toilet paper roll.

I definitely agree - need to use disinfectant for sure.

Mist them with alcohol spray. Once they are painted no worries of any kind of contamination.

But if you use them for fire starters, it doesn't really matter.

Using toilet paper rolls for crafts poses no more of a health concern than keeping your toothbrush container, toothbrushes and makeup brushes out on the toilet tank lid. Although I do not recommend this practice myself, I see it all the time in real estate listings.
