Hi Eileen, the best product I've found is Ctri-Strip. It can be found at most hardware and big box stores. Just apply it liberally to the painted areas, cover with plastic or plastic wrap to let it do its work for a half hour or so. Remove the plastic and scrape it away with the paint included. Depending on how many layers of paint, you may need to repeat. Then use soft moistened cloth to remove the remaining paint and sand as needed.
Hi Eileen I've heard good things about the non toxic paint stripper called Citra Strip. I would start by stripping as much of the old paint off as you can and then sanding it down. If you plan on repainting the wood you won't have to do quite as much sanding as you would if you plan on staining it.
Citristrip is my 'go-to'!
You can remove paint from wood using chemical paint strippers, all-natural paint strippers, heat guns, sanding, or vinegar. After applying these products to the surface, use a scraper, wire brush, or stripper to remove the paint.
You will have to sand it off.
Citristrip. I have a quart of I plan to use to refinish a oak kitchen table. I learned about this stuff here on Hometalk. Thanks everyone out there for recommending this.
Love the fact it doesn't have harsh fumes and it removes dried latex and oil based paint.
Yeah, Citristrip. Made to remove layers of paint and finish

Hello. Chemical stripping or....sanding could be options.
The stripper called Citri strip is a non-toxic paint remover, works great.
Here is how to remove paint from wood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR20LbydCYo
Start with scraping if it's just spots. If it is all over, use a paint stripper. Something mild like CitriStrip since you are living in the area. Make sure no to leave on too long, it's horrible to get off once it is dry.
If there are several layers then I would use a belt sander.
Citra-strip or use a palm sander. If using a sander, start with 60 grit, and work your way up to 220 grit to make the wood smooth.
I agree that Citistrip is the way to go. I’d like to use it to refinish my kitchen table, too.
I hate chemicals, so I always opt for a really good mask and a sander.
