Before you build or buy a chicken coop, you need to make sure it's going to be the right size.
Having the right size chicken coop is not only efficient but also dictates the quality of life for your flock.
A coop that is too large can get too chilly in the winter, resulting in more cleanup for you. A coop that is too small causes overcrowding and bullying.
The square footage of the ideal coop for you depends on the size of your flock and where they spend the majority of the daytime.
Do they have a large run or are they allowed to free-range? These factors all play a part in determining the ideal chicken coop size

If you are building from scratch, you will want to incorporate a nesting box that will collect eggs and prevent the girls from eating them. Some chicken owners will never have this problem, but most will encounter it at some point in their chicken keeping experience. Once they start to eat eggs there is no foolproof way to break them of the habit. You could put a camera in the coop, see who it is, and eat them, but the best method is to be proactive. When looking for chicken coop plans I first made a list of things I must have for the coop.
I wanted 2 doors to give me access for cleaning. A separate door on hinges so I could access the nesting boxes and eggs.
We made the big roost removable so twice a year we can take it down and pressure wash it.
I have two good sized vents in the walls. One is below the chicken roost and the other is high on the wall above the nesting boxes. They need fresh air since exposure to the ammonia from their urine can cause problems for them and their sight.
It was important for me to have good access to the nesting boxes and keep planning this out to make cleaning easier for you and a nice safe house for your girls.
