Buffet Makeover
When shopping at my local thrift store, I found this amazing buffet for only $30 the only thing was it didn’t have a top, but we knew we could add one.
It was in perfect condition and is solid wood! It even had all the hardware, which is always good as it can get expensive.
I removed the hardware, then cleaned the whole piece down with Krud kutter, a great cleaning product found at Home Depot.
I used paper towels to clean it. It just gets messy, so it’s best to use paper towels, then throw away.
I had purchased these beautiful glass knobs from Hobby Lobby some time ago and now I’ve found the perfect piece to put them on. Look for their 50% off sales when buying the hardware, it can get expensive.
Using slate by green sheen paint company, I brushed the edges as there was a lot of details to cover.
Using a foam roller, I finished the drawers. It only took two coats to do.
After the paint dried, I used a sand block to smooth it out and lightly distress the whole piece.
Once Sanded, I used a wax called Vera thane from Home Depot. This wax is easy to use. I used a sponge pad because it glides on easily. You can find them at Harbor freight. They are actually used for staining. Once dry, buff it up with a soft cloth or buffer.
Now onto the top. These planks are perfect because they are tongue and groove and look amazing.
Once we measured the perfect size my husband cut them to fit. He attached the top with wood screws.
I used two different stains for the top. I wanted a warm weathered look. I used the gray first, but it was too light so I added the brown and it was perfect!
These are the two stains I used.
This is how it turned out.
I cleaned the hardware with salt, vinegar and dish soap. It get all the grind off and brightens them up.
They are perfect with the new hardware now.

This is similar to the way I refurbished an old buffet I inherited from my grandparents. We think it was purchased in about 1950. Not an antique, just old. The paneling around the bottom had rotted, so it had to be replaced. My son worked for a company that did bathrooms and kitchens, and he got me a granite top for it. It helped me choose the color, Paris Grey. With the granite, I can set an ice bucket or a coffee pot on top.
