Hi Peggy,
Can you share a photo? You could possibly re-line it with fabric. Difficult to know unless I can see it!
If it's cedar-lined, often a light sanding will renew the cedar smell for storing clothes. The outside may just need a good cleaning and/or polishing. If the finish is damaged, you may need to strip off the old finish and apply new.
Hi Peggy, here's a link to seeral posts on Hometalk showing what others have done. Perhaps one of those will inspire you on how you might want to update yours to make it truly unique.

Hi Peggy here's a beautiful transformation of an armoire using paint. I agree with one of the other answerers you could lightly hand sand that cedar and get all that wonderful smell back! https://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/furniture/armoire-make-over-43542275
Armoire Make Over
Without knowing how much the-vamping you want to do, this dramatic makeover was done by diluting the contrasting paints and wiping them off, to accent the trim.

Hi Peggy, if you are looking to revitalize the scent your can try this, cedar that has lost its scent can be restored by simply sanding the exposed wood surfaces lightly. (Likewise, a cedar sachet used in a drawer needs only to be pinched a bit to release a fresh scent from the wood shavings inside.
But if you are looking to give it a new look, I recommend chalk paint, I love the coverage and the matte finish is a rich look to me. You can seal it with a matte clear coat.
Hope this video helps you out, it is for a chest, but the same goes for your armoire

Armoire Redo!
Some ideas here if you want to revamp and repurpose your armoire:

It will depend on the style you are looking to achieve. First, you can refresh the interior cedar smell by lightly sanding with a fine grit sandpaper or block. I like the block because it is easier for me to use.
Clean up the exterior. If you want to update, you could add a stencil and new hardware.
Hello could you possibly post a photograph to better see your situation and area of concern? Paint or varnished armoire?
Hi Grannie, it would be great if you could post a picture of the armoire. Or at least give more details about the present finish.
Hi! Do you want to repurpose it or refresh it? To refresh it, lightly sand the cedar. To refinish the outside, you could strip it and refinish it, or paint it. To repurpose it, I would turn into a small office or craft space.
Found this for you, Peggy

you could chalk paint it or restain it too
Please post pics. Restoring old wood furniture can be alot of work. If it is in sturdy condition and just needs to be refinished then you must start by stripping the old finish off and applying a new finish. There are lots of on line tutorials to get you going...
