Updating a Craft / Media Cabinet With Milk and Chalkboard Paint

I purchased this DVD cabinet from a friend who was downsizing. While knotty pine is not my style, I knew right away I would paint it red with chalkboard inserts, and it would not be used as a DVD cabinet!
Below is a "before" picture...it's a solid, all wood little cabinet..not bad at all, just a tad bit boring.
After a very quick scuff sand, I gave the exterior two coats of Red Wagon Sweet Pickins Milk Paint. This is an old cabinet, and I wanted to keep it a little rustic, so I didn't bother sealing in the knots. However, there was no bleed through! I topped it off with two coats of dark wax--being very careful not to get wax into inserts--I had plans for them.
I then gave the insert panels three coats of black chalkboard paint--seasoning them before use. With the addition of new hardware, the cabinet's transformation was complete.
I've styled it as a craft cabinet, as well, to show you that something doesn't have to be used solely for it's original purpose. This cabinet was manufactured and purchased as a DVD cabinet, but I think it also makes an AWESOME craft cabinet!
It's also the perfect height to be used for a console / entry way table. PLUS it has the added benefit of extra storage.
So the next time you're at a yard sale, etc., if something is solid, well made, don't walk past it just because it's kind of ugly--think of what else it could be used for and how you can give it a makeover!
