Old Hutch Gets a Shabby Chic Face Lift

updated hutch from icky to chic
My mom bought this hutch early 60's. Poor thing has had a long life and needed something so I decided to paint it. I figured it couldn't be worse. The first thing I needed to do was wash it. It had so many layers of 50 yrs of waxing that needed to be removed.
I started with the top as it would be easier to paint then take off when dry. I used eggshell white paint and used blue flowered self stick shelf liner to do the inside back wall and the shelf. There are two layers of paint.
I did the bottom the same and when it was dry put the top back on. I did the trim in a eucalyptus green.
I didn't want to really stick anything to the windows so I just taped the paper to the inside and then set them back into the door.
I used ceramic tile that I had left over from another project for the shelf to prevent scratching. Nice way to show off the teapot collection. While I was at it I painted the little shelf to the right green.
Enjoyed the project?

PennyB9 on Aug 18, 2015I've never been a fan of painting over wood, but this piece was so dated. You definitely brought it into the new century, and the transformation is beautiful! It looks so clean and modern and I love the colors you chose.
