I've done about 6 of these designs w/stain over the years. See my blog for more pictures!!
This piece was filthy when I got it. It got a major scrubbing and fine sanding.

Drew out my design with chalk (it's easy to erase). you could do freehand work or use a stencil or tracing, whatever you prefer.

Used a variety of stains- mixed and shaded (it's a bit like painting). Practice on a scrap piece of wood until you get the technique down. use a brush around the lines, and a small rag to blend it. You're basically painting with stains. if you want a darker tone, let it sit longer before wiping. But, if blending, you should wipe immediately or else you may get 'lines' instead of a actual blending of shades.

Hopefully you get something similar to this when you are all done.

Michelle over at M&M Embellishments is the Queen at drawing her designs. Mine are pretty simplified and seem to suit the style of the dresser.
I also make sure to do the drawer sides and inners (clean, sand and shellac). Then the handles were sprayed a combo of silver and gold.
As for the body, ASCP in Ochre, w/hints of Greek Blue. I sand in between coats so it's nice and smooth. Distress in a few spots, and clear wax. I hate waxing. It's quite the workout!

Remember! With chalk paint, you have to fine-sand (220) between coats and after the final coat, to get it buttery smooth. Apply your wax and buff until it shines. Run you hand over it. Like a baby's bottom!
See how smooth and shiny??

So beautiful. Do you paint all of one color at a time, wipe and let dry then next color? When wiping do you have to be very precise or do you want edges of each section to blend or feather into each other a little? Also must you use oil base stain? Thanks for your advice.
