DIY Side Table Project

My husband’s grandmother gave us this old table base that sat in our garage for months. With a trip to the home improvement store, my husband decided he wanted to refurbish this into a side table for our front porch.
So this is what the table base looked like before – green and old.  To prep the base, we took a wire brush and went over the entire base.
We painted the bottom with Rust-Oleum Metallic in Oil Rubbed Bronze.
Originally we were going to use an extra piece of butcher block counter top we had until the hubs saw this round pine table top.
He decided he wanted to take a torch and fire the top (this is his new thing – let’s pray he doesn’t burn the house down…just kidding). In order to make the torch really bring out the wood colors, lightly sand the top first.
After you have lightly sanded, either with an orbital sander or just good ole regular sandpaper, fire up that torch!!!  Please be careful as you can get burned very easily.
Once you have completed this, lightly sand the top again.
We used a gray weathered stain and coated the top and then wiped it off.  Brush on the stain and then wipe off going with the grain.  Let the stain dry completely before adding a layer of polyurethane.
Our favorite polyurethane is the one in the can as it doesn’t omit as much smell as the spray on type.  You are welcome to use what you have on hand or feel more comfortable with.  I will say the polyurethane that you brush on goes on much smoother and you don’t have to use as many coats.  If you are going to be using this table outside, make sure you coat the bottom and top to seal the wood.  Look at that beauty!!!
After you have applied the polyurethane, let it dry completely.  Flip the base over and bolt your top to the table.
Look at how fantastic this turned out!  So proud of the hubby!!!
