Hi Danielle I would start by washing absolutely everything that can be washed. Couches, blankets, curtains, rugs etc. And then carpet clean if you have carpet. Airing the whole home out will help a lot too. I would set up a fan and open the windows, turn on the hood fan above your range.

Worst case scenario a new coat of paint on the ceilings and walls will generally take care of any lingering smells.

You will have to locate the source, carpet, walls, attic, and duct system. Clean everything possible. What do those 2 rooms have in common? I would also check the drip pan under the refrig, that could contain muck of some kind. Since the weather has turned colder, have you activated your furnace yet, it may be something in the duct connection there, a leak that is picking up the smell from an unused part of the house. If that still is not doing it, bring in a professional.

You may want to have your carpets and upholstery cleaned. Those are big culprits for holding bad smells.

I would look for damp towels, spilled milk. I know I had a rancid smell coming from my kitchen and it turned out to be a potato that had rolled out of sight. YUCK but once it was gone so was the smell. Check your light fittings they can emit some fowl odors when they get hot.

  • If you've eliminated the source then I wipe down the hard surfaces with vinegar and water. The vinegar cuts odors. Then I would steam clean upholstery and carpets.

You really need to find the cause of what is making the room smell bad. A good airing out and washing any blankets etc will only help for a bit. Could something edible have fallen out of sight?

I would also suggest to change your furnace filters if you have not yet done so. Also remove all floor/wall vent covers and wash thoroughly before setting back in place.

  • The first thing you need to do is find the source and remove it. If something spilled on the carpet, you may want to hire professionals to come in and clean it.

Do you know exactly where the odor is coming from? I'd try cleaning out your fridge and add open boxes of baking soda around your house. The best way is to find the source of the odor and clean it.

These are usually the most common trouble makers.

    Wet Clothes

If you’re guilty of putting clothes in the washing machine and completely forgetting about them, you’re not alone. Leaving your wet clothes in the washing machine is a sure-fire way to make your home smell musty. Even leaving your wet clothes in there for a few hours can already make them smell a bit off. Leave them in there for half a day, and they will be so unbearable you need to wash them again.

If possible, take your clothes out of the washing machine and put them in the dryer or hang them up immediately. Not only will this help make your house smell better, but your clothes too.

    Carpets

Keeping your carpet clean is essential for a fresh-smelling home. Carpets work exactly like sponges, absorbing moisture, smells, and other particles that can make them smell musty. However, only vacuuming isn’t going to cut it. While vacuuming will get all the dirt and debris out of your carpet, it won’t help remove moisture or bacteria.

What’s best is to use a steam cleaner, shampoo, or baking soda to remove the musty smell and mold from your carpet.

    Mattresses/Bedding

Your sheets, blankets, mattress, and practically any other fabric you lay on will eventually collect moisture from you and other people’s bodies (yuck!). While it may take a while, places like your bed, sofa, and loveseat can start to smell musty over time.

To prevent this, wash these places regularly using an appropriate cleaning solution. You can also opt for a mattress topper/protector to keep your mattress smelling fresh all year round.

    Dish Sponge

If you think about your dish sponge, it’s constantly wet. To no surprise, it’s a prime target for mold, mildew, bacteria, and numerous other foul-smelling compounds that make your kitchen reek. Unfortunately, people keep their dish sponges way past their prime. The second you notice yours is smelling funky, ditch it and get a new on
