Every once in awhile I find myself chipping or breaking my coffee mugs, and then tossing them out; but then I wondered, why not create a coffee mug DIY? Coffee mugs can be made into several different crafts. As an example, I have a friend who creates jewelry from broken mugs. Also, to make mugs customized, you can add stencils. However, this DIY I wanted to make floral. To do this, I added some flowers onto a foam piece inside of a mug. Read along to see how I did this!

If reading isn’t your thing, I have a video tutorial below, watch the replay!

Moving forward, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Flowers
  • Wire cutter
  • Coffee mug
  • Foam piece
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors (optional)
  • Scrap fabric (patriotic themed optional)
  • Toothpick (optional)

Firstly, put your foam piece in the mug, making sure to hot glue the bottom and sides. Because your hot glueing the foam piece to the mug, it’ll keep it sturdy for when we put the flowers in. Once your foam piece is secure, cut the extra length off your flower stems and proceed to stick them into the foam.

Make sure to stick the flowers into the foam piece!

I wanted to make this coffee mug DIY into a more patriotic theme. Therefore, I added a little flag to place into the coffee mug.

Moreover, to create this mini flag, I took a toothpick and hot glued fabric onto it. In addition to that, I took fabric and replicated a little flag design out of it. In order to create the flag, I had to trim fabric with stars on it to put in the corner of the stripes, so I hot glued that as well.

I love to collect cute coffee mugs and I always have such a hard time throwing them out after they break or chip. This is such a nice idea, especially for a centerpiece or decor for a dinner party. Any other ideas for how to repurpose old mugs? Thanks for sharing!

    • You can do lots of stuff with old mugs, I have a friend that actually will break them entirely and then makes the scrap pieces into jewelry. I've also made a flower waterfall, which was a mug 'pouring' flowers out. I used hot glue and a candlestick to hold it up! I'll post it here soon. Hope that helps!
