Last year (well before Thanksgiving) I purchased a new Christmas tree. This new tree is 3 pieces. You attach the 3 parts and ta-da -- the branches are perfect and it already has lights attached!

There wasn’t anything wrong with my old tree; it was just a lot of work, attaching all those tree parts to the pole, adjusting the smashed tree limbs, and adding and untangling all those lights.
I decided to donate my old tree to Habitat for Humanity. They didn’t want it! Keep in mind this is before Thanksgiving. I even offered to put the tree up for them. Still not interested. I decided to donate the tree to Goodwill. They already had 5. They weren’t interested either.
At this point, I’m thinking my old tree is going to end up at the dump. I’m a fanatic about recycling so that’s when I decided to make lemonade from lemons, or in my case, a giant wreath from my old tree!
Stapling the tree limbs to the plywood.
My husband cut out a circle from a piece of salt treated plywood. Since the tree branches are green, I spray painted the wood frame a dark green to be less noticeable. Next I stapled the branches to the frame.
The backside of the plywood
I used thin wire to attach pinecones, red Christmas balls, and 2 packages of LED outside lights to the tree branches.
Lights, Berries, and Pinecones
The only hard part is mounting the wreath onto the house each year. I solved the problem this year. In the diagram below I spray painted the eye bolt so it wouldn't be so noticeable screwed into the house (and left up all year). The U-bolt is screwed into the back of the wreath and we clip on a Swivel Bolt Snap Hook Lock. Now all we have to do each year is pull the wreath up using a rope and then clip it onto the eye bolt.
Attaching it to the house
This is the finished wreath.
In the off season we hang the wreath off of a L-shaped mounting bracket above the garage door.
