I love the chalkboards that I see everyone make or buy and have been itching for one myself. I however, refused to pay $30+ for one. So I waited and waited to find supplies that I would need to make one for close to zero dollars.
My daughter had an old chalkboard easel that she wasn't using as it broke so I had my husband help me disassemble it and cut I'd own to size to make a new chalkboard. I just used some little finishing nails to hold it in place and simple photo hook on the back to put it up. It was quick, easy and free! Can't beat that!! It was really cool to take things we already had and make something new and useful!
Old broken easel, the legs were broken and it was just propped again the wall. Kind of useless but I thought maybe we could fix it so I kept it!
Chalkboard removed and cut to size. We removed all the sides and pulled the chalkboard out. We measured the opening in the frame and then we cut the board to size. Super easy.
Old frame that had no glass, I bought this the way it is at a thrift store. I had intended to use it with some chicken wire to make a memo holder.
New chalkboard! We put it all together and added a frame hook onto the back to hang it with. It turned out great. It's hard to tell in the photo but the frame is grayish green with gold rubbed on in places and the inside is burlap. Super pretty!

I never thought of deconstructing an easel, and I've had access to some broken ones in 30 years of teaching! 😇
