I was inspired by a Hometalk Live by Junque 2 Jewels and I decided to give it a try!
I grabbed all the items that I had around the house. If your craft room is anything like mine you have a myriad of colors, options. I grabbed a few different colors not really knowing what I was going to end up using.
I settled on Gray Mist by Rethunk Junk and from my Wise Owl collection Seaside Cottage and 1950's Green. For my first coat I just slopped (ha) colors on with really no rhyme or reason. I didn't sand the boards or anything just wanted them to be natural. In the Hometalk she used Caulk to get highs and lows in the wood but that is one thing I didn't have in my arsenal so I just skipped that step.
Here they are with the first coats on.
Once they were dry I applied opposite colors, again not really any rhyme or reason.
Then I sanded each board with 80 grit sandpaper to get the first color to show through some. Nothing drastic just enough distressing to be able to see the different color(s).
Then I laid it out in how I wanted the boards to be. Again totally up to you and the look you are going for.
I then got my husband involved! :) I laid the boards painted side down so that he could attach the backing.
We just used old scrap wood cut down to length.
Simply screwed screws into each board. It's important to use the correct screw length so that you are not popping out on the side of your finished board! (Yep! Learned that one the hard way!)
When that was done we added a few coat hooks and this metal infinity sign that I had previously ordered for another project that didn't quite work out. It is the perfect addition to our kitchen. We have always just hung our coats on the back of a kitchen chair and now we have a spot for them! It's weird how the picture looks like a few of the boards are pink (my light switch isn't pink for sure!) , they aren't! But regardless we love it! Thank you for following along!

Thank you Mary - I used Gray Mist as a base for some of them and then used Seaside Cottage and 1950's Green on the others and then when I went over them with the second color I just mismatched them. Hope that helps!
