I always joke that my husband is a collector and I’m a hoarder. And while the latter is slightly true, I tend to put the “trash” I find to good use. For example, this month I took a broken antique bed frame I had been holding onto since I was 17 (that’s about a dozen years😳) and turned the footboard into a super functional coatrack!

Check out the super simple transformation below-

First, to give a little back story I bought this antique bed frame when I was about 17 years old. I fell in love with it when I saw it on the classifieds and spent $125 on it! That was so much money to 17 year old me that when it broke several years later I didn’t have the heart to trash it.

This is the only picture I have of the bed frame before I completed this project. Unfortunately you can’t see the footboard and the headboard together, but the actual footboard piece used for this transformation is below.

Here is what the footboard looked like. As you can see one of the legs was already off and it needed a new coat of paint.

The first thing I did was use a rubber mallet to knock the other leg off. I tried to cause minimal damage, but this leg was stubborn and the wood split a bit. I’m not using them for this particular project, so I didn’t worry too much about it at the moment.

Next, I used the miter saw to cut the wood tabs that were used to attach the legs to the footboard. My cut ended up reaching a little too far as you can see, but I patched it with wood filler when I patched up a few other flaws.

Once the wood filler was dry I sanded the whole thing, wiped it down, chalk painted it white and sealed it.

The last steps were adding hooks which I got from Amazon-

and attaching a French cleat to the back for hanging.

And that’s it! Now I have an ornate, one of a kind coatrack that holds all our coats and bags. It will be perfect for this Utah winter and I put some “trash” to good use!
