Growing Blue Hydrangeas
A week in New England has convinced me that even I can grow blue hydrangeas. All you need is the right soil, sun and watering conditions.
"macrophylla" hydrangeas set their flowers on old wood. Little pruning is required to ensure prolific blooms unlike "paniculata" hydrangeas which set their flowers on this year's growth
An acidic soil (lower PH) is required to get these deep blue blooms. Add a mulch high in acidic matter like pine needles or lower the PH balance with Soil Acidifier
Part shade and lots of water are desirable conditions for growing beautiful hydrangeas
Make sure you grow these "lace cap" hydrangeas in shadier spots to protect them from the afternoon sun.

The west coast of BC is ideal for the blues.They literally grow in the ditches and abandoned yards. Here in the dry interior is another story, you have to treat them like babies. Still gorgeous though:)

My hydrangea bush has lush beautiful leaves,,,use to have beautiful shade of baby blue flowers...now last 2 years, 2 flowers..that's it! What to do now? The leaves are so huge and gorgeous we can't figure it out...it is my favorite plant!
