We use a lot of fresh herbs in our kitchen, so we finally decided it was time to start our own herb garden! We chose to use parsley, cilantro, and basil because they’re our most used.

What we used:

Mason jars

Decorative stone

Potting soil

Herb seeds

Step 1: Drainage

First I filled the bottom two inches of the mason jars with the decorative rocks. You can use any rock/stones- the idea is just to provide an area for excess water to drain from the soil. You can also use any recycled jars or cans- I just had a bunch of mason jars laying around.

Step 2: Soil

Next we filled the rest of the mason jar with potting soil. Tip: Use a quality soil to ensure your seeds do well.

Step 3: Plant

Next we planted the seeds according to the package. We put a few seeds in each, and put them 1/4” deep in the soil. As the seeds grow into plants we may need to thin them out.

Step 4: Water and sun

Finally, we filled a spray bottle with water and sprayed the top of the soil. We put them in a sunny window in the kitchen and will continue to keep the soil moist until these babies start to grow.

I’m so excited about this little mason jar herb garden! I will come back and update the post as these babies grow, so stay tuned.
