Garlic Scapes: Grow It! Eat It!

Have you ever heard of Garlic Scapes? Well, there are so many amazing edible plants that can be grown that you might not find at your local grocery store and you may never hear about them. Not to worry, Garden Therapy has started a new series called Grow it! Eat it! where you will find out about all sorts of plants that you can grow... and eat! Today we will be learning about Garlic Scapes! http://gardentherapy.ca/garlic-scapes-grow-it-eat-it/
If you have planted a bed of garlic, by June you should have a plethora of curly stems all around. They are the flower stalk of the hardneck garlic plants and you should remove them for a variety of reasons.
One of those reasons is that they are quite delicious! They have a mild garlic flavor and have the consistency of asparagus.
To harvest the garlic scapes, you will snap them at the bottom of the flower stalk as close as you can to the leaves.
There are a few ways to consume these little curly delights. If you have plenty, you could sautee them.
You can also make it into a pesto. Visit the blog for a full recipe so you can make your own. http://gardentherapy.ca/garlic-scapes-grow-it-eat-it/
If this has your taste buds on alert and you don't have a garlic bed. Visit the blog and find out how to plant your own! http://gardentherapy.ca/how-to-grow-garlic/
