I found this on the curb in my neighborhood, a little dusty & from the home of a smoker. so I cleaned it up, febreezed it, repaired what I could & got to work chalk painting it. Can you guys tell how much I love chalk paint?
here is after cleaning, febreezing & before the any paint.

Quick tip: if you find some smoky/musty furniture like this & you need to air it out after febreezing, put it out in a semi humid place like a garage for a full day & night to dry before you start painting. Don't over spray it, down, just let it set with the febreeze in the humid area, with a fan or ac unit on it & dry into it. that will help clean it internally. No more funky smells!
I created some chalk paint out of leftover pale olive green I had on hand. That went onto the top, interior & main sections of the ottoman.

Tip on creating your own chalk paint: there are recipes here on Hometalk that state to add water & baking soda in various quantities. Depending on how old your paint is, you may or may not need to add any water at all. Use your own discretion, start with baking soda first, til you get a good consistency you can work with. I will put this paint into recycled containers, so I can take those old, hazardous paint cans to my city recycling. If your new container doesn't seal tightly, seal the edges with press & seal wrap.
I used a spring green on the swirls & thin detail areas, as you see in this photo.
I finished up with 3 coats of clear as a sealant.
Suggested materials:
  • American decor chalk paint   (michael's(had on hand))
