Let me show you how to transform a plain wicker basket into a French country style organizer. This driftwood finish DIY basket it absolutely gorgeous and so much fun to make.

I am excited today to show you how you can get a DIY driftwood finish on some bathroom storage.

Wicker basket

1. Find a basket

For this project, I grabbed some wicker baskets. I find the darker ones work better for this project but if you have lighter ones you can stain them dark before beginning.

Painter's palette, paint and a wicker basket

2. Paint the basket

The first thing I wanted to do, since my baskets were already dark was to paint them with some pale grey paint. I made sure to shake the paint up well and then put a little on my painter's palette.

Painting a wicker basket

I used a dry brush for this step, and just worked on the exterior of the basket adding paint on all sides.

With the grey added to the basket, you'll notice that there were still some pieces of the original finish showing through. I wanted a faux driftwood finish so I was ok with that as it added some dimension.

Adding a driftwood finish to the wicker basket

When the grey was dry, I added some honeycomb colored paint. You don’t want the paint to be too thick for this stage so you can add a little bit of water if it is thick.

To add the lighter paint, I used a dry brush and very lightly dabbed it on in random spots. If you get too much on, you can use a paper towel to wipe it off and lighten it up.

Painting the number 2 on a tag

3. Create a tag

Once I had both colors of paint on my DIY driftwood basket, I wanted to add little farmhouse inspired tags. I took an artist brush and painted some numbers on the little tags.

4. Add ribbon

To finish off my baskets, I took some fun farmhouse-style ribbon in a black checkerboard pattern and used it to tie on my tags.

Cutting farmhouse-style ribbon

I wanted the ribbon to have a finished look so I folded it in half and snipped off a little section at an angle. When opened up, it gave the ribbon a nice finished look.

Tying the tag onto a basket with ribbon

Since my ribbon had wires, it was easy to thread it through my tags and then tie it around the handles of the baskets.

Did you paint the inside of the baskets? Only the exterior is mentioned.

I won a really cheap basket, it looks like a small laundry basket. I hate to throw it away but I need ideas to make it look better. I don't think just painting it would be enough (I like what you did though and would do that if I had a basket like that.). Any ideas?

Like the tie on handle. Figured a towel within.

It’s cute. I’ve done this many times with my baskets when I tire of them. Is there a purpose for the tags?
