Paint a Wooden Playhouse

2 Materials
4 Hours

Are you ever too old for a playhouse? I would argue no. But since I'm getting too big to kneel and play inside my kid's playhouse, I settled for painting it instead. My daughter is pink obsessed (check out her pinkified room here), so we made all her pinkilicious dreams come true when we painted our wooden cedar playhouse white with a pink door. Here's how it looked without paint.

We purchased the playhouse from CostCo and it took about six hours for my handy husband to assemble. Once he finished assembly, he attached boards to the right side of the playhouse to create a sandbox.

So, what about the paint? We used Behr exterior paint and gave the house a coat of exterior primer before painting it. Frankly, the primer might have been an unnecessary step since our Behr paint & primer in one covered so well. If I did it again, I might skip the primer. Here's the after photo.

I used a quart sized can of black paint for the roof. I only needed a sample sized can of pink to finish the door. To make painting easier, take the door off the playhouse and remove the hardware.

We also used zip ties to attach three plastic planter boxes to our fence. The sandbox toys fit neatly inside. Another perk of this storage solution is that it drains rain water.

We also added a small plastic garden fence around the playhouse. It contains the woodchips and makes the kids playspace feel extra special.

Next summer, I'll paint the inside of the playhouse. Have any tips about painting a ceiling without getting paint in your hair? Leave me a comment :)
