Is That Really the Same Old Fabric?

My neighbor gave me this old and tired caned back chair. I knew it needed a makeover but kept it in my living room for about a year before getting started. I thought it needed to be reupholstered and was procrastinating!
Here is the original chair. The cane had no breakage and other than typical dings and scratches, the wood was in good shape. I decided to keep the fabric and just see what the chair looked like after painting the frame.
I started by taping off the fabric where it met the wood. I dug the tape down into the crevices and applied the tape. I then took my paint and went to town! It took three coats to fully cover. For more info on products used, please click here...Caned Back Chair Before and After
Here is the after!
Wow! I actually love the fabric now! I'm so glad that I decided to wait and see how it looked after I painted the frame in a brighter color!
I also sanded the paint softly to distress it in places and highlight its details.
The chair has dings etc. and trying to create a super slick, modern finish would have been impossible. I love how it still looks aged but also new and bright!
It is sitting pretty in my family room. A very inexpensive solution to dark and dated fabric - just paint around it! For more Before and After projects, please click here! Paint Color Highlight

Do you know how I can clean the upholstery on a similar chair I have? If I can get that clean, then I think painting would make it great. Love the look of your chair! Thanks.
