How would you refinish a dining room table with surface time inlaid?

The table is about 23 years old. We are currently in the process of re-doing the cushions on the chairs with better foam and new fabric. The grout on the tile is starting to separate and I want to redo the table top instead of replacing the entire set. This is a table that seats 8 with the leaf inset. The entire set is still in great condition, but I want it updated.

I would chalk paint the "orange" wood to a color that works with your decor. I would then use the legs/pedestal from the table and make a new top with non-orange wood and no tiles. This way you reuse the chairs completely and the structure of the table while making something completely different!
What about replacing the inlaid tile with a new modern tile that you love!
To remove this tile and prepare the undersurface for installation of new tile would be a messy and time consuming job.
Painting all the tiles the same color (perhaps the same color as the fabric on the cushions) would be less work.
I don't envy you in making a decision what with having so many options and great products out there. If you chose to remove the tiles chose larger size tiles for replacement. Or chose wood flooring planks. Since this a table it probably gets wiped often and that is what is affecting your grout.
Your reupholstering the chairs and not painting them i assume. I would remove the tile and replace it with either birch, maple, or oak plywood. All depends on the grain you want. Do not cover the border wood. Try to get a stain that is similar to the wood tone you have. You may need to mix some to get the tone. Do some sample staining on scrap plywood that you choose. Minwax latex stains is what I use. Seal with three coats of Minwax Polycylic water based polyurethane.
I just really feel that not only are tiled surfaces waayyyy out of style, they are impossible to keep clean! All those grout indentations are permanent crumb catchers, no matter how beautiful the tile may be.
You could even do an overlay with peel and stick "wood"!

Finally, a really EASY tabletop fix - buy a new top! You can cruise the area resale places for another table the same size with a wood top to replace yours.
you could use wood, or reclaimed wood, you could paint the tile, you could regrout the tile if you like it

If you want to keep the tile surface, first I would regrout in a color that you like. I would stencil the tiles or change them out. The other way to fix would be to take the tiles out and replace with wood. Then stain the entire set the color you want. I would do the chairs first. Sand lightly I would use General Finishes, they also make a top cover that cannot be beat. A bit more work, but I think you will like it better.
Sounds like a lengthy fix, but do able. Thank you Dee
If you want something really unique you could stencil the tiles. You'd just need to regrout first. There are tons of patterns out there for every decor style you can think of...this is just for inspiration. https://www.hometalk.com/diy/paint/furniture/how-to-stencil-a-mexican-talavera-tile-table-20545372
How to Stencil a Mexican Talavera Tile Table
You can paint the tile
Paint the tile or stencil it
I would stencil the tiles. It would look really pretty!
Something like this would look nice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwRcBhMs1UQ
This is another tutorial - it explains that to make the stenciling last, you should coat it with a water-based poly: https://www.allthingsthrifty.com/how-to-paint-a-dated-tile-table/
Or, you could simply paint, the wood trim and tile all one color for a clean look: https://prettyprovidence.com/how-to-transform-an-old-tile-table-tutorial/
If a fresh coat of paint on the tile isn't what you are looking for you could use construction adhesive to add a new wooden top. Reclaimed wood, strips of cabinet grade plywood cut in strips to look like planks with a pickling finish. The grain in some sheets are very beautiful. Using the pickling allows the grain to show thru or stain it.
I would use some stencils to give additional life to your table
You can paint the tile and add a stenciled pattern if that appeals to you. There are loads of tutorials on Hometalk for that so try out the search bar at the top left.

Hello, you could regrout the tiles, and do a chalk paint on the wood, any color you love would work due to the color of the tiles. Tile is such a versatile surface!
Hello,
You could always paint or Replace the Tiles or Colour the Grout or use tile stickers on top or applique fabric or Photo's and sit a Safety glass on top of it.
