Writers Desk Makeover

Just an ordinary little desk that needed some love.
Boring boring boring
It's not TERRIBLE I thought. Maybe something on the conservative side? This wasn't going to be my usual Hot Pink or Bold type of makeover.. but I still wanted it to be unique!
Decided to start with the chair and wait for motivation. Using a crackle medium, the chair legs certainly did their job.
I'm going to show you a few shots of the chippy chair. I rarely do the chippy, distressed look, but this set was kinda talking to me lol. There's a trick to getting this look if it's what you like.
The lighting is poor, but if you stay with me, I'll show you the whole set together! I get this look using a crackle medium and chalk based paint. Yup! It's a coat of primer (faint white you see) paint and medium. How do you get it chippy?? Use your mouse sander on it before it's completely dry. When the crackle was STARTING to do its thing and crackling up the seat, I took my mouse sander and had at it!! It's a bit gummy, but it works!
As you can see, it lifts in big chunks- just how I wanted it.
For smaller edges, I sander by hand with a normal 220 grit sheet. Now while I played with the chair- The desk was saying help help help.
Since plain old paint wasn't going to do it for me- I found some Calligraphy styled wrapping paper to spruce it up. Using Heirloom Traditions 1gel ( my addiction), I jazzed up the faces of the drawers.
After painting and decoupaging, I used a gel stain for an aged look.. going heavier at the edges of the paper. You can see how it fell into all the little "love bites" throughout.
Here's a good example of how a good gel stain can soak into your chalk based paint and give you that " it ain't just paint" look!!
I used a standard Copper rub on the hardware. I think this was Rub N Buff from Michaels.
I have better shots on my Facebook page, so don't forget to like and follow Tamara Lee Designs.. here's a few more of the finished piece....

Where did you get the calligraphy wrapping paper? It is so appropriate for a desk! Would love to use it on a small writing desk in need of some love that I found in my mother's attic. Thanks for sharing your project. I'm inspired!😃
