Painting a Non-Removable Frame | Mirror Makeover
Hi Hometalk friends! Today, I am sharing my first Trash to Treasure project of the year where I gave a classic thirty-year-old mirror a new updated look by giving its frame a lovely finish!
This is the mirror I started with. It's 4 feet tall and I believe its original finish was brown/gold.
The object in question was extremely dirty and had a few imperfections, but take a look at all the exquisite details.
I thoroughly cleaned the mirror frame, I used TSP and a brush from the Dollar Store to reach all the nooks and crannies. I had an old towel ready for wiping and drying to ensure the scroll details and frame were completely dry.
Once it was completely clean, I utilized a scraping tool to eliminate any loose and peeling paint. The majority of the peeling paint was located at the base of the frame. I assume this is due to it being on the ground while in storage.
I opted for this Cobblestone Chalk Mineral Paint shade to achieve a neutral finish. It was effortlessly applied with my medium oval brush, resulting in a seamlessly smooth finish.
To make sure the paint gets into all the crevices and rattan on this mirror frame, I pounced the brush-up and down.
To give this mirror more dimension and age, I brushed on some brown wax. I have a designated old 3″ dollar store brush that I keep for waxing.
I don’t use wax as much as I used to and I’m not sure why. It is an EASY way to create dimension and helps bring out the details with little to no effort
To bring out the finer details, I also used gold gilding wax.
I prefer using my mirror scraper tool to remove the dry paint AFTER my mirror frame is all finished.
I cleaned all the shaved paints with my shop vacuum.
The glass mirror was then polished with a cloth and Windex.
And here's the finished result. Love the new look! From the neutral color to the contrast that the details give!
Here’s another look at this painted mirror frame before and after. I hope it’s inspired you and given you some ideas for your frame projects!
