I found this beautiful vintage 1970’s Bassett desk on Craigslist. Sunflower husband went and picked it up with me and it was a perfect Saturday morning capped off with coffee in my Jayhawk Tervis and a visit to Menard’s.
I was at Menard's to pick up some metallic paint that I had been itching to try. Metallic furniture is in right now. I usually say that anyone can paint anything but it takes some kind of super human skill to paint a flawless metallic finish! I am going to be the first to tell you that I do not posses the skill level required to get a flawless metallic finish. So, I paint a grungy, aged metallic finish. This desk was the perfect candidate!
The first step in this is to clean the piece and sand the top. I am a terrible sander so Sunflower husband to the rescue. He spent 2 hours at least sanding this to a beautiful smooth finish for me.
Next, I stained the top dark and I started the base and the drawers of the desk with a chalk type paint in a cream color.
With the cream colored base coat of chalk type paint dry, I coated the desk with two coats of white colored metallic paint and l and followed that with a dry brushed coat of gold metallic paint.
Once I had the whole desk done, I used 120 grit sandpaper to age the finish and coated the whole thing in a water based satin finish sealer for durability.
I am a sucker for original hardware so I left the original pulls on the drawers.
A great update to an outdated vintage desk!
