Jennifer V on Jan 05, 2014I'm one of those lucky enough to have fig trees...I have three. Two are Celeste, the other is a Texas Turkey. I gave my daughter one in a container (several years ago), and she kept it until she bought her first house. Then she planted it, moved it twice, and now it's on the north side of her house next to a living room window. My big problem wasn't figs, it was citrus. I have five lemon trees, a lime and a kumquat. Every winter, just before the first anticipated frost, we haul the trees in their containers, and they go into the garage under a mega-watt grow light. They hate it, but it's better than freezing. They stay there until late February. Somewhere in the middle of February, they start to bloom again, and the garage is filled with that lovely lemony essence. And I know it's time to get them ready to move outdoors again so that the bees can pollinate, and we can begin the cycle again. Unlike figs, which require almost no intervention, citrus are heavy feeders, are finicky about watering and once in a sunny spot, they don't like to be moved. Figs also like sun, the more the better. I had one that was shaded by my neighbor's mulberry tree, and it didn't bear fruit until we lopped off the over hanging branches (because she didn't believe in pruning) that interfered. Do grow figs...they make the best jam, they are great eaten out of hand, and you can even grill them and put them on Bruschetta with a hunk of Gorgonzola for a fabulous appetizer.
