The quality difference in today's furniture and yesteryear is astounding. Keeping furniture out of the landfills. Re-imagining a special piece. So many reasons to re-do furniture. Check out this barcart I did for a client!
Before - nice bones and drop leaf sides
This piece was done for Janie of Plan Jane's in Sonoma CA. I begin each project by assembling supplies.
1. Clean Slate by Amy Howard
2. Hammered Silver spray by Rustoleum
3. Dead flat finish by Modern Masters
4 Waverly "Ink" colored chalk Paint
5. Custom blue homemade chalk paint
6. Sponge brushes
7. Sand paper

Janie said she wanted an all black cabinet but....I just couldn't.

Step 1. Clean all surfaces with Clean Slate
Spray paint all edges with silver spray paint
Step 1 Remove hardware from drawer and doors with a simple screw driver, even if screws are crossed. Put hardware in a zip lock bag. Spray Paint cabinet edges with silver spray pain let dry. Then paint with a coat of the Waverly paint. You can see the sliver coming out through the center post.
Lay pieces flat so paint does not drip down
Step 2 Spray paint the louvers on the door fronts as well at the corners of the drawer face, and inside cabinet shelf with the silver paint.

Step 3 Wait till the silver paint dries and then paint over your surfaces with the Waverly paint. Have a rag handy to wipe away some of the black paint and allow the silver paint to peek through.

Step 4 When out side of doors are dry turn them over and paint a contrasting color. Don't forget to paint inside of drawer too. If you are painting two colors in your drawer, be sure to use painters tape along the side. I wanted to paint the bottom of the drawer a light color so items could be easily located once in use.
Step 6 Paint all outside surfaces with Modern Masters dead flat finish. Use brush strokes with a small sponge brush in one direction followed immediately after with a large dry sponge brush in the other direction.

This trick will give even distribution and minimal lines. Let dry and do it again, at least on the top where there is going to be a lot of use and likely wet drink glasses.
Step 5 Paint inside of cabinet with a contrasting color. Then reattach doors and screw in new drawer pulls. You could paint the inside of the cabinet with a protective finish as well but this home made chalk paint should stand up to a bit of ware.

You can distress the edges of the drawers and doors and top or leave as is. The picture doesn't do it justice. The silver was a great choice as it adds glam for a bar cart.
Step 7 Deliver to piece to customer who is tickled pink and glad it wasn't all black!
