How to Decorate a Big Blank Wall and Create an Entryway

No entryway + no coat closet + 3 roommates = a messy living room. Solution? Custom DIY wall panels to create landing strip/command center. The wall panels added a much needed pop of color to a big blank wall without actually painting the wall (great way to add color in a rental apartment). The panels keep all the wiring out of sight for the DIY wall sconces and the DIY phone charging station. The message board is great for leaving messages and the DIY coat racks now give a home to all those stray coats that were making their way onto the sofa!
The custom built wall panels are an inexpensive way to add color to a rental apartment and it's also a great way to add the function of an entryway, where none existed before.
Before: big blank wall the front door leads directly into the living room and there is no coat closet.
These are DIY wall sconces I made for about $25 - the wires run behind the panel and I used a wireless wall switch and receiver to turn them on and off. You can see how I made them here: http://www.engineeryourspace.com/how-to-make-a-wall-lamp/
The DIY charging station was built to give easy access to the phone charger cables but to hide the cables. The power strip sits inside the shelf and the cable for the power strip runs behind the wall panel to the outlet, hiding everything from sight. No cables, no mess. There are vent holes on the bottom of the charging station to help air circulation and to dissipate the heat generated by the phone chargers.

Lori on Feb 20, 2015Great job, love the video. I just sent it to my husband because I have been trying to explain to him that this is what I want, on a bit larger scale of course, for the end of the living room for our tv and wall hanging fireplace. He keeps saying, "but we don't have a fireplace." Picky picky picky. :D
