How to Plant & Care for a Tree Peony

All the basic information you need to know to plant and care for one of the most beautiful types of Peonies.
What is it that focuses your attention on the gentle curves of a white flower? Is it the lack of colour that accentuates the shape and the translucence of a white petals?
I have lots of experience growing herbaceous peonies, but none with Tree Peonies. Some research was therefore in order. I gave my peony a drink and left it on a garden bench in the sun, while I went inside to look up some basic facts.
Tree Peonies are actually woody shrub.
They come in colours beyond white: pink, red, coral, purple, yellow and blends of different colours.
When best to plant a Tree Peony
Planting a Potted Tree Peony:
Ongoing Maintenance
Pests and Diseases
Fertilizing
If I pick the right site and take good care of it, my Tree Peony should well outlive me. And I should be able to look forward to years and years of beautiful white flowers.

Linda Campbell-Fuller on May 20, 2015The only problem I have is that a plant that says "deer resistant" is only for whitetails. I have Fallow and they eat just about everything.

Three Dogs in a Garden on May 25, 2015@Cindy Hi Cindy, Size is one way to distinguish the two. Tree Peonies are like small shrubs. They have woody stems that stay above the ground all year. Herbaceous Peonies die back to the ground in late fall and fresh shoots appear in spring. Herbaceous peonies are the more common, so there is a good chance that is what you have in your new garden. My Shelties are 8 and 15. They are great dogs aren't they?

Three Dogs in a Garden on May 25, 2015@Cindy Hi Cindy, I am happy to hear that you have such a faithful, if not bossy companion. I would suggest that you treat your peonies to a little manure or compost to give them a boost. Then I would recommend that you top dress them with some natural cedar mulch to suppress the weeds. If it is not too late, you may want to install some plant supports. Peony flowers are heavy and can flop to the ground in the rain. (Or you can always do as I do and pick most of your peonies for the house! LOL) I hope your peonies turn out beautifully!
