Add a playful touch to your holiday décor with this adorable DIY Christmas doormat!

During the Christmas season, Anthropologie sells a gingerbread doormat, which I absolutely love, and it inspired me to make my own for a more affordable price.

Learn how to create this gingerbread house doormat to welcome the holiday season.

This post was transcribed by a member of the Hometalk editorial team from the original HometalkTV episode.

For those of you who are more visual learners, you can watch this video tutorial.

Plain doormat

For this project, I started out with a plain doormat from the hardware store; the coconut husk or coir types are perfect for this project.

Tracing rooftops using a sharpie

1. Draw the rooftops for your DIY Christmas doormat

I began by flipping the doormat over and tracing the roofs of a few houses with a sharpie. I sketched this freehand, but you could download a picture and copy it, or even get really precise and cut out your own roof pieces and use them as a template.

Cutting out the rooftops using a box cutter

2. Cut out the outline of the rooftops

Then I carefully cut around the outline using my box cutter. The carpet was fairly easy to cut, but you want to work slowly and take your time so that your cut edges are neat.

Using chalk to draw the outline of the gingerbread houses

3. Draw a rough outline of gingerbread houses

Next, I flipped the holiday doormat back over and used a piece of chalk to roughly draw in some outlines for the houses. Again, you could download a picture or cut out a cute gingerbread house template. I was happy to draw from my imagination.

4. Paint over the chalk with white acrylic paint

With the outlines done, I used some white acrylic paint to go over the chalk.

Adding details to the DIY painted doormat

5. Add details to the houses

Now that I have the outline of my little gingerbread houses, I'm going to go back and add some details like doors, windows, and a roofline.

Painting shingles on the roof with white acrylic paint

You can use stencil brushes and other paint brushes for this, make the DIY doormat your own.

Painting a wreath on the window of the holiday doormat

I decided to personalize my mat with a wreath. It added the pop of color my DIY painted doormat needed.

I also added a few bushes.

Make a festive DIY Christmas doormat to welcome your guests

Now I have the cutest welcome mat to bring a smile to the faces of those who visit.

I love that it looks like a giant gingerbread dough cookie with a white royal icing outline. This candy-themed Christmas decoration captures the spirit of the season and is ideal for transitioning to the winter season.

I hope my DIY Christmas doormat inspired you to craft your own DIY outdoor Christmas decorations and specifically, outdoor DIY Candyland Christmas decorations. I would love to see your creations!

Wishing everyone a happy and safe holiday season.
