I recently found a pretty comforter for our newly renovated guest bedroom. The downside - no pillow shams! This gave me the opportunity to create pretty shams with mitered corners!
I have been making envelope style pillow shams for years. They make redecorating without commitment a breeze... for this project I first started out by drawing out my plans so that I could see what I wanted to accomplish and what I'd need to do.
The Plan: the pillows are standard size. I wanted the mitered corner and front panel to appear like a picture frame. So, in my plan I added fabric for the sides to create a box effect. Once I had the plan set... I selected fabric.
I didn't have matching fabric, but one of the complementary colors in the room is white and the background of the comforter is white. White is so versatile too! The fabric weight I needed was 'home decor' and it needed to be either cotton or a good blend. You want it to stand up well for the mitered corners but most importantly be comfortable.
The next step is to carefully measure, cut the fabric and begin to sew. The first step in sewing is to create a finished edge for the two pieces for the back - envelope style. Then comes creating the mitered flange edges.
The important things to remember about creating mitered corners is alignment and just how far you sew. Then trimming the edges. The rest of the project is relatively easy.
I've created a step-by-step PDF so that you can easily follow in making your own mitered corner pillow shams. More pictures and information shared on the post at A Delightsome Life

Nice instructions, and beautifully done : ) Love them on the bed! I don't, however, call this the easy way : ) lol Three pieces of material , where the back overlaps to insert pillow, then sew in from the sides by the desired length of the edge... for me that is the 'easy' way. Might not be a wonderful as yours, but the effect is mostly the same.
