Easy Farmhouse Chalkboard

In a recent Monthly DIY Challenge, my friends and I chose a chalkboard theme. I had been looking for something to hang above our brick fireplace, so this was the perfect opportunity to create something that was just right for the space!

I found these affordable MDF chalkboard panels at my local home improvement store. So much easier than painting boards with chalkboard paint myself, and it turned out to be cheaper too!
I cut some 1 x 2s to size and then distressed them using a hammer and the teeth of a saw to give them the look of old reclaimed wood. Hit the boards with the hammer and press the saw blade into the wood. Be careful!
Next, I stained them using my favorite stain. I love how the stain brings out the dents and grooves from distressing them.

I also drilled some pilot holes for attaching them to the chalkboard.
I attached the 1 x 2's to the chalkboard using screws and hex nuts. I attached a piece of rope for hanging it by using a hammer to nail in an electrical staple to the back of the board.
Next, I seasoned the board by rubbing a piece of chalk all over it and then wiping it off with a dry cloth. It's important to season chalkboards so you don't get ghost marks when you erase your writing later on.
Lastly, I printed out a quote and transferred it to my new chalkboard.

Learn how to transfer printed text here. For chalkboards, use chalk; for any other project, use pencil.
I love my new farmhouse style chalkboard!

It looks very nice! When you get the time, could you please tell me ... what is the difference between chalk and a chalk marker? Thanking you in advance. 🎄
