Simple Budget-Friendly $2.99 Thrift Store Picture Makeover

I love simple projects. Like this outdated picture I found at the thrift store on one of my visits. It was only $2.99, but I knew I could make it look like a million bucks (well, so to speak).

Here is the Supply List:

Striped Ticking Fabric in Your Color Choice (I got about ½ a yard from Hobby Lobby on sale).

Waverly Chalk Paint in White

Cricut Machine (If you do not have a Cricut, you can use a stencil of your choice!)

220 Grit Sandpaper

Scotch Multiple Purpose Adhesive

Matte Clear Acrylic Coating Spray

Paint Brush

I started by removing the glass and outdated photo mat. I laid the glass to the side. I wiped down the frame with a damp cloth. I gave the frame two coats of the chalk paint, allowing drying time in between coats. After the frame was completely dry, I used my 220 grit sandpaper to distress around the edges.

While the frame dried, I cut my fabric to the 8x10 size of the frame. I sprayed the back of the fabric with adhesive and placed it on the glass, making sure to use my fingers to smooth it out.

I used my Cricut machine to create the vinyl quote for the frame. You can also use a stencil if you do not have a vinyl machine. I wanted something that would be considered farmhouse décor, so I chose the cow.

After I applied the vinyl to the fabric, I sprayed a light coat of Matte Clear Acrylic Coating Spray.

Here is the final piece!

Give this project a try! Your local thrift store is probably loaded with wood frames. Let me know if you decide to give it a try. It’s a very simple project that anyone could do.

Happy Upcycling!
