Do you need a bulletin board but want to dress it up a bit? A fabric bulletin board may be your answer to having a cork board that looks good. Supplies

  • Luan plywood if you want to create a custom size, or

  • store bought cork board

  • roll of cork or cork squares (if making a custom size)

  • spray adhesive

  • fabric of choice

  • staple gun & staples

  • any embellishments you may want

  • thumb tacks

Step 1

If you are making a custom size, cut the luan to the size you want (the lumber store will do this for you), and attach the cork to the luan with spray adhesive.  If you are using a roll of cork you will have to lay it out and let it flatten ahead of time otherwise you will have a very difficult time attaching it to the board.

Otherwise lay the store bought cork board face down over your choice of fabric (also face down).

Step 2

Begin stapling your fabric around the cork board by stapling the fabric  on one side and then go to the opposite side, pull the fabric tight and staple again.

Before going all the way around I tucked the corners in to avoid bulk, then I continued all around the cork board until the fabric is tight and stapled all the way around.

That’s it!!

If you are making just a basic fabric covered bulletin board then you are all set.

You can get a lot more creative too.

I have also made some smaller bulletin boards by taking an old frame and cutting the luan and cork to size and inserting that into the frame.

You could add ribbon or other decorative elements to suit your style.

You could add pockets to hold items too.

A fabric covered bulletin board can be so functional and have many uses from displaying artwork to holding notes and lists, to organizing projects.

I am using my fabric covered bulletin board as an inspiration board on the left side to hold my paint colors, a fabric swatch and a terra cotta saucer.  I have more items to add, such as rug inspiration photos and other elements I want to add around our house.   Having these items displayed and visible will help to keep me focused on my design plan because I find it so easy to get distracted!

I am also using this board to hold favorite quotes, notes, lists, and photos on the right side.

I’m sure this will get filled quickly, and If I find I need more space I will just make another fabric cork board:)

I chose to hang my fabric covered bulletin board to the wall using saw tooth hangers which is as changeable as a photo.  I did this because this cork may move as I am making some changes in this room.  If you want to hang your cork board more permanently and firmly you may want to consider screwing it the the wall.

You could hang your fabric covered bulletin board in your mudroom/entryway, your kitchen, office, or den.

I was just thinking how funny it is that now I use Pinterest to save any photos for inspiration, but I remember the time that I used to keep a notebook ( I still have it) and fill it with magazine pages.  I still do tear out magazine pages…I can’t help it!

Having this bulletin board is my way of having a bit of Pinterest at my fingertips without having to look at my phone or computer.  I love Pinterest but I also really like having things physically in front of me as well.

This fabric covered bulletin board is hanging in our spare bedroom.  This sad little bedroom is currently having an identity crisis.   I recently moved my desk in this room.  You see, now that I am blogging more I find that I am spreading out my STUFF  on my desk and it gets cluttered.

I have had the desk in the living room for about four years and that worked out very well for me.  Now that I am blogging I need a place to spread out and I don’t want all of that clutter out on the desk in the living room!

Isn’t it funny how our homes accommodate our lives in different ways throughout time?  I will be posting later about my plans and changes for the sad little spare bedroom.

loveLoveLOVE these ideas!!! I especially love the upcycled magnet board - 1/2 tray!!! Truly gorgeous ideas, and the upcycled tray is brilliant!!! Many of them HAVE a hole in a handle; otherwise can easily be drilled/nailed through, and just hung on a nail! Or, do the reverse, and decoupage/glue the bottom-side of the tray and hang things...

Still - so stinking cute!!! ~Chrissie
