How To Organize and Store Lumber

My garage is always so messy! The work bench becomes a dumping ground and things are always piled up there. I also tend to just lean things against the walls or push them into corners instead of finding a better way to organize them. After years of piling up my lumber by leaning it vertically against the wall, the pile had finally encroached far enough out that I needed to think of a better solution!

We have two large windows in our garage which are great for allowing light in, but terrible for storage. I can't lean anything there or use that wall space very well. We quickly realized we could use the HORIZONTAL space in front of the windows without blocking too much light! It was a win/win!

We found these steel shelf tracks at the hardware store. They are super versatile! You can add on so many attachments and could use them all over the garage! We only need 3 tracks and they were easy to mount directly with screws into our exposed studs.

Next up we were able to add on these long shelf brackets! We would sort of make shelves with our lumber pile!

We then just stacked our long pieces of lumber across the brackets! Easy and relatively inexpensive storage option! Fun fact: when we moved in we found this old shopping cart in our garage. WE use that for small pieces of scrap wood!
