I'm excited to show you how to bring new life to a cracked or chipped vase by turning it into a textured planter. This technique is easy and requires just one key material: pre-mixed plaster from Home Depot. Let’s begin.

Tools and materials

  • Cracked or chipped vase
  • Premixed plaster (available at Home Depot or similar stores)
  • Plastic spatula or putty knife
  • Water
  • Cloth or sponge
  • Paint (optional, for finishing touches)
  • Optional: gloves (for protection)
Vases before the makeover

1. Prepare the vase

Begin by examining the cracked or chipped areas of your vase. This is where we'll be applying the textured plaster to create a stunning effect. Make sure the vase is clean and free from dust or debris.

2. Applying the premixed plaster

Open your premixed plaster and give it a good stir. The texture is already incorporated, so no additional steps are needed.

Using a plastic spatula or putty knife, scoop up a small amount of plaster and apply it to the cracked or chipped areas of the vase. Spread it evenly over the surface, creating a textured layer.

3. Adding depth and character

Experiment with the pressure and angle of your spatula or putty knife to create varying textures. This will give your vase a dynamic and visually interesting look.

Allow the plaster to set for a short while. It should start to harden but still be workable.

4. Sculpting and blending

Once the plaster has set a bit, use your spatula or putty knife to sculpt and shape the texture as desired. You can create peaks, ridges, and other decorative elements.

Dampen a cloth or sponge and gently smooth the edges of the textured areas. This will create a cohesive transition between the original vase and the textured sections.

5. Paint (optional)

If you wish, you can further customize your textured vase by painting it with a color of your choice. This will enhance the texture and give it a polished look.

Allow the paint to dry completely before displaying your masterpiece.
