If your garden is starting to look tired, spruce it up with these fall-blooming flowers. Flower gardening isn't just for spring. These fall bloomers attract butterflies and look gorgeous until the first frost - and beyond!

Chrysanthemums are a great fall flower. Mums can be tall or short, perennials or annuals. The National Chrysanthemum Society lists 13 classifications of mums on their website. Plant in full sun in well-drained, loamy soil.

More garden mums! Mums come in a rainbow of colors including white, pink, lavender, dark purple, yellow, bronze and orange. Pinching the flower buds off when they first appear in early summer encourages them to bloom later in the fall. If you don't pinch the buds off, they will bloom in midsummer.

Both panies and petunias (shown here growing in a window box) like cooler weather. Pansies can withstand a frost, and can live through a cold night. Many bloom continuously until several days of below-freezing temperatures. Petunias prefer cool, moist evenings, and will last until the first frost. They make a great fall combination.
