From Lowly Wire Hangers, to an Interchangeable Season Coat Hook Shelf!

I had recently (finally?) updated all my wire hangers to some pretty ones. Took me long enough!
While piling them up, a brain storm hit. Those hangers resembled hooks... real hooks are expensive, but these would be free...
Hmmm... maybe I'll make something for fall! But preferring my efforts to last all seasons, a shelf idea that could morph through all the seasons became the answer.
So grabbing a stencil, and some cut wood blocks...
... this was the result.
What would you have your shelf read?
Happy fall! Hang up your coat, and come on in for some apple cider!
But don't let the FALL message fool you. This very fun project comes with a few all season surprises...
First off, I needed some hooks. Wire hangers were snipped after the join, to create hooks of sorts.
4 square blocks were cut from a square fence post.
Two fence planks were placed like a shelf, as shown.
Then the wire hangers were spaced in between the blocks.
But those blocks are a little plain... let's give them a reason for being there, other than as just shelf supports!

Desiring a FALL project, this APPLE FARM stencil would work perfectly! But in more ways than one...

FALL became my primary message.
BUT... I wanted the shelf to last all year around.
So I flipped the two L L blocks to their backside, and also stencilled R and M to spell FARM, so I could change it out once Fall was a done deal.
The wire hangers were installed by adding brackets on top of them.
It's rustic, but it works. :)
Tip: If hanging something delicate, wrap a rag around the hanger tip first for extra cushion.
Happy FALL, from my wire hangers to yours!
And here's a glimpse of what FARM looks like, decked out for Christmas! Bring on the egg nog...

Where do you find the kind of brackets you used?

    • To get them rusty and old, watch out for garage sales, thrift stores, or salvaged yards. I got mine from an antiques place. You can also purchase them new from any hardware store. If you google, you can rust them with certain solutions. Happy junk hunting! :)
