There are a few things to check. The lever may need adjusting, the flap can be leaking, the arm might need adjustment, check fir a small crack in the fixture. The easiest thing to do is rrr we place the working mechanism in the tank and it’s not expensive. If that doesn’t fix it then it’s time to look for leaks in the fixture.
Very often, it's one of two things. The float needs adjusting or the seal may have sediment around it and that needs to be cleaned out. Here's a link that tells you how to fix it:

Hi Marie, I have had this happen before, and usually the chain is caught up. If you lift the tank top off you will be able to see if the plunger chain is tangled. The other thing is that if it is old, you may need to replace the mechanism in the tank. The plastic starts to dry out and does not create a tight seal so water trickles through and it sounds like it is constantly running.
Our tank at work keeps running from time to time and its because the little chain that holds the valve closed to fill the tank up gets kinked and needs to be straightened out to get it to cover properly. Hope that helps!
something wrong with the handle or a in the line. Take the top off the back of the tank and try to see if something came unattached.
From Family Handyman with a video there to tell you how to check for the problem and what to do about it:

Sometimes we have to jiggle the handle
This video is very thorough and will help you to get it to stop running: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV-peiKW9gM
I have had this happen when using toilet blocks that you put into the cistern. They dissolve and the residue get into the seal. Also the two screws attached to the push button could be broken. This happens when you keep taking the lid on and off.
Hi Marie. Take a look inside the tank. The chain has probably gotten kinked or broken. We even fixed one of our toilets with a paper clip. Used it as a link in the chain. Good luck Marie. Merry Christmas.
Hello. Usually removing the tank lid can reveal the dysfunction. Repairs can involve replacement parts or be easy as adjustments.
Mine did too. Lift your tank over, There is a level that you have to hold down and the water has to reach it. I did this three times and it finally has stopped doing.
Try jiggling the handle!
You might need a kit to repair and replace the inside parts of the tank. very easy to install.

did you check the ball or flap to be sure it is on the hole inside the tank properly?
Hello Marie,
Put something under the arm of the Ballcock to lift it up and therefore close the vent. (maybe tie polystyrene to it) Best wishes. Call a Plumber to replace it after the Hols etc.
Probably need a new flapper they are not expensive or hard to put in. Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, etc carry them
Hi Marie, you may need to replace the flapper, you can buy one online or in store, it sounds like yours is leaking, if you are in there anyway, just put a new no ball flush kit in, they are quite easy to do.

Hi! You need to adjust or replace the flap inside. Look at the workings you have and I guarantee there is a YouTube, Home Depot or Lowe's video for it. Stay safe!
The flap inside the top of the toilet
Hard to tell without looking inside the tank. Sometimes it's just a matter of a stuck chain.
Sometimes you don't even need to replace the flap. You just need to jiggle the handle on the toilet so the flap will close properly.
