Just finished a remodel for my 5 x 8 bathroom and added extra storage that I thought I would share.
Shelving was created by hanging two shelves (Rubbermaid) from four brackets. The brackets are white so you can barely see them. I found gray baskets that fit perfectly on the 8 x 35 inch boards. We added a small bracket at the corner to further stabilize the boards.
We made two niches in the shower area to hold shampoo and soap.
I added a cabinet over the toilet to hold either toilet paper, towels or small items. It also has a bar for the hand towel.
I purchased a metal basket to hold "clutter" that eventually would end up on the vanity counter.
I purchased a double curved shower curtain rod to hold extra towels or to have a place to hang wet towels or drip dry items.
I reused this magazine rack or actually I don't really know what this is! But now it is going to hold the wash clothes.
My bathroom used to have a flat mirror and a medicine cabinet on the side.
Now it has a new medicine cabinet and a niche with a basket. The niche has beadboard inside and trim around. It also has a unique feature . . .
A plug for our electric toothbrushes!!!
We all have toothbrushes and sometimes they take up room on a vanity. When they are electric they take up even more room with their chargers. This way mine are completely out of the way. (In this picture you can see the bracket used on the shelving.)

I put that this was an easy project but my son did all the work! He's really handy. I would say the niche was more challenging because of cutting the trim to fit.

Hope this gives you ideas for your small bathroom!
